Ronaldo Walks Out After Being Told He'll Be Benched Again
Cristiano Ronaldo walked out of Portugal's training camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, September 30, after coach Jorge Jesus told reporters the 41-year-old striker would be dropped for the team's upcoming Nations League match against Denmark. The captain had been scheduled to train with his teammates at Parken stadium but departed immediately following Jesus's press conference.
The incident marks a dramatic turn in the relationship between the defending Nations League champions and their iconic captain. Portugal entered the Denmark fixture with a perfect record, having won both their opening Group A4 matches—defeating Wales 1-0 and Norway 2-1—to sit atop the standings with six points.
History Between Coach and Player
Jesus, who was appointed Portugal's head coach in July 2026 on a four-year contract after the team's disappointing Round of 16 exit to Spain at the World Cup, had benched Ronaldo for the entire Norway match on Sunday. The veteran striker remained unused on the bench as AC Milan forward Goncalo Ramos scored the winning goal. Ronaldo immediately left for the dressing rooms after the final whistle without acknowledging Portuguese supporters in the stands.
The 72-year-old coach and Ronaldo share a recent history, having worked together at Al-Nassr during the 2025-26 season when Jesus led the Saudi club to their first Pro League title in seven years, with Ronaldo finishing as top scorer with 28 league goals. When Jesus took the Portugal job, he stated he would select Ronaldo "as long as he's playing and is in a condition to be selected, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team."
Ronaldo's Statement
"Following the national team coach's press conference, and after having a conversation with the Portuguese Football Federation president, I decided to leave the national team's training camp," Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. "In due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated. Now is time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception."
Coach Denies Conflict
At his Wednesday press conference, Jesus had insisted there was no conflict between him and his captain, though he acknowledged Ronaldo's disappointment at not playing against Norway. "There was no incident whatsoever," Jesus said. "Any player—and I was a player myself—when you spend 20 or 30 minutes warming up and then don't get on, no one is happy about that."
The coach explained he had informed Ronaldo before the Norway match that he would not start but might come on later. "Afterward, as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It's nothing to make a fuss about," Jesus said. He also clarified that Ronaldo had not refused to train on Tuesday, as some Portuguese media suggested, but had done individual exercises for physical "mobility" and "strengthening."
Jesus confirmed his intention to start Ramos, who joined Milan from Paris Saint-Germain in June for approximately €74 million, against Denmark as well. "If everything goes according to plan, it will be Goncalo who plays," he said. "If I need him, he'll come on. If I don't need him, he won't."
Federation Responds
Shortly after Ronaldo's Instagram post, the Portuguese Football Federation released a brief statement confirming his departure but emphasizing the squad's focus on their objectives. "Preparation for the two matches against Denmark and Norway continue as planned with the 24 remaining squad members," the federation said. "The entire delegation remains totally focused on the national team's next fixtures and on achieving the established objectives."
Portuguese media reported that Ronaldo's private jet was en route to Copenhagen, and video showed him leaving Parken stadium with two backroom staff members just after Jesus's press conference.
Uncertain Future
The controversy comes at a sensitive time for Ronaldo, who has stated that the 2026-27 season would "probably be my last year in football." His contract with Al-Nassr runs until June 2027. Portugal's all-time leading scorer with 146 goals in 234 appearances now faces an uncertain conclusion to his international career.
Despite the dramatic walkout, Portugal went on to defeat Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen on October 1, extending their perfect Nations League record to three wins from three matches and maintaining their position at the top of Group A4. The defending champions, who won their second Nations League title in 2025 by defeating Spain on penalties in Munich, showed no ill effects from the controversy surrounding their captain's departure.
