Russian businessman with Kremlin ties funded Donald Trump Jr.'s Bahamas wedding

Donald Trump Jr.'s May wedding celebration in the Bahamas was bankrolled by a Russian businessman with deep ties to Moscow's leadership, according to an investigation published by ProPublica on September 14, 2026. The revelations have triggered a congressional investigation into the president's eldest son's foreign financial relationships.

Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association (IBA), covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for the three-day festivities held on Little Pipe Cay, a 38-acre private island in the Bahamas. According to the ProPublica investigation, Kremlev paid to rent one of the islands where the approximately 40 to 50 guests stayed overnight and attended a reception. He also funded additional costs including a fireworks display.

The payments flowed through an IBA-affiliated entity in Dubai that the boxing association uses for financial transactions. Kremlev, who attended the intimate celebration with a large group of other Russians, appeared discreetly in a group photo of the casually dressed wedding party.

Controversial sports organization leader

Kremlev has led the IBA since December 2020, a tenure marked by significant controversy. One of his first major decisions was securing Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom as the organization's general partner in 2021. The IOC later cited the IBA's financial dependency on Gazprom as a primary reason for concern.

In June 2023, the International Olympic Committee took the unprecedented step of formally expelling the IBA, making it the first international sports federation ever removed from the Olympic movement. The expulsion stemmed from concerns about governance, financial transparency, and corruption. The IOC specifically noted that the IBA was not prepared to transparently explain its sources of financing or its full dependency on Gazprom.

Questions about the organization's financial transparency persist. While Kremlev announced in May 2023 that the Gazprom contract had ended in December 2022, IBA CEO Chris Roberts confirmed in December 2024 that the organization continues to receive sponsorship money from the Russian company.

Kremlin connections

Kremlev's proximity to Russia's highest levels of power is well-documented. In 2023, he was part of the official Russian delegation during President Vladimir Putin's visit to China, underscoring his connections to Moscow's leadership circles.

Following publication of the ProPublica story, Donald Trump Jr. and his wife Bettina Trump confirmed Kremlev's role in an Instagram statement, describing him as

our dear friend
who
very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations
as a wedding gift. Kremlev's press office told ProPublica that he and Trump Jr. met
a couple of years ago
and maintain a friendly relationship, claiming he has
never discussed political matters with any of his American friends.

Congressional investigation launched

The revelations prompted immediate political fallout. On September 15, 2026, Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, launched an investigation into Trump Jr.'s relationship with Kremlev. Garcia sent letters to both the White House and Trump Jr. requesting documents including communications between the two men and financial records of all wedding purchases made by foreign nationals. In his letter to Trump Jr., Garcia described the allegation as potentially

the most serious allegation against you to date.

President Donald Trump did not attend his son's Bahamas wedding. On May 22, 2026, he stated on social media that

circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so.

Days before the ProPublica revelations, Donald Trump Jr. had appeared as a speaker at the Republican convention in Dallas on September 10, where he criticized socialism as

a story of a few enriched elites who benefit from this radical system, while millions of normal people suffer and live their lives as serfs to the government.
